It's actually too simple. At Stone Walls door the air smells sweet.....The Alvord Bridge (stone with an iron gate) is located at the start of Haight-Ashbury (air smells sweat = marijuana). The next few lines are consistent with many other interpretations that put us in the vicinity of Stow Lake as Crossover Drive (Rte 1/Ace) CROSSES in the direction of the jewel before turning north. The object of Twain's attention is water. (His "name", riverboats, Tom & Huck, etc.) The giant pole is the stairway to Huntington Falls (water). The giant step takes you from the top to where Sweeney Observatory once stood (rose colored concrete) that was destroyed in the earthquake of "06) the rose & watch. The table they sit on is not a table nor a cable car. It is the outline of a typical drain pipe used at the turn of the century. Therefore, the reflecting pool that was near the observatory that used to feed Huntington Falls. I also refer to the outline of the figure...part of Preiss' objective was to get people out to appreciate the world around them. Her arms mimic the hills you can only see from the top of Strawberry Hill. I discovered this totally by accident, but the match is remarkable. Her hairline also indicates Simone's Point - the spot where one must stand in order to get the proper perspective of the topography. In addition, the Chinese Pavilion (Golden Gate) was dedicated in 1981, so it was a fresh landmark associated with immigration which was also significant to Twain. There are additional elements that further support this theory, but are not necessary for this explanation.

J 3 The "table" is really representative of the Reflecting Pool - the base is not a trolley car, but the outline of a turn-of-the-century drainpipe. The flower represents the color of the Observatory...rose colored concrete. The alarm clock is set to show 0-6, the date of the San Francisco earthquake of 1906 - the alarm clock representing the emergency. The dark flower points down - may indicate that the casque is hidden in the drainpipe OR that it is in the broken part of the drainpipe that lies nearby. The drain no longer operates - recent rainwater sat until it evaporated or seeped into the dirt covering the reflecting pool concrete lining. The drain is probably filled with dirt or covered over as probes have not yet found an actual drain. The water from the reflecting pool once drained to the top of Huntington Falls, but that was stopped a long time ago.
